What is enzyme coffee? Does it help you lose weight or is it just a buzz?

Can you lose weight just by drinking coffee? Sounds implausible at first. But can “real coffee” help you lose excess weight?

If you do some research on the internet, you’ve probably come across ads for a product called enzyme coffee. Crazy what you read about it – what’s the hype?

What is enzyme coffee?

Enzyme coffee contains special proteins called enzymes that are essentially catalysts for chemical reactions in the body. In this case, the enzymes in these specialty coffees help boost a person’s metabolism.

Normally, most of these beneficial enzymes are destroyed during the roasting process of the coffee beans. Afterwards, some remain and they have a positive effect, but not quite as strong as when consuming enzyme coffee.

Can enzyme coffee help with weight loss?

Can you really lose weight by drinking enzyme coffee? Several studies have reportedly shown that people who drank enzyme coffee regularly lost more weight than the control group. Some studies also indicated that the abundant enzymes in enzyme coffee help break down fat cells. However, these experiments are inconclusive when it comes to being scientifically convincing.

The truth is that enzymes are present in almost all plants, including coffee beans. So what does this mean? It means that there is nothing special about enzyme coffee. The studies were inconclusive because the manufacturers couldn’t prove that their coffee was more beneficial than the one you can buy in the supermarket.

Health benefits of coffee

But that’s not to say that regular coffee doesn’t have health benefits, because it does. It’s not just fragrant lovers who say that. These benefits are backed by science. Here are some of the health benefits you can get from drinking (limited) coffee every day:

  • Coffee helps regulate blood sugar levels – According to researchers, the chlorogenic acids found in green coffee can improve blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. They also help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Reduces the risk of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease – Coffee, especially black coffee, contains compounds that protect the brain. They can improve brain function by boosting blood circulation, reducing the risk of dementia.
  • Helps control blood pressure – This may seem contradictory, but coffee helps keep blood pressure under control. It does this by dilating blood vessels, thus improving blood flow.
  • Promotes weight loss – The claims made by enzyme coffee manufacturers are not entirely false. Coffee does contain enzymes that boost metabolism, but not to the extent that enzyme coffee producers claim.

Conclusion

Coffee does have a positive effect on weight loss, but you should not rely on it alone. A healthy diet and regular exercise are still unbeatable. Coffee is only there to help the process along.
