There is nothing difficult about starting your own yoga practice at home. You just need a couple of basic items and enough discipline to push you through your fitness journey. If you are thinking of starting yoga, here are some tips to help you get going:
Grab a yoga mat and some basic props
The neat thing about yoga is that you do not need much in terms of equipment. You just need a mat and a couple of props to make the poses easier. When yoga first got a foothold in the West, practitioners practiced on towels laid on the grass. It was not until the 1980s when the first yoga mats became available.
Allocate space for your practice
If possible, find a place in your home where there is plenty of peace and quiet. Also, having even just one wall nearby can help, though unnecessary. The space should be wide enough that you will not be bumping against anything while you are doing your poses. You can even decorate the space if you like.
Commit to a certain time and make it easily achievable
Are you a morning or evening person? Can you squeeze some time for your yoga practice during your lunch break? There is no such thing as a proper length of time for practicing yoga. In fact, you can start by committing just 10 minutes of your day or blocking a section of time that works best for you. The key here is that your yoga practice should fit into your life, instead of the other way around.
Be aware of the pain
Pain, pinching and pushing – these are your body’s physical boundaries. Beginners at yoga cannot distinguish between pain and discomfort. Pain is hot and sharp whereas discomfort is a dull nagging sensation. The rule of thumb here is that if you feel any pain in your joints, then it would be best for you to stop right away. You can just resume the activity once the pain subsides or you get better.
See it through
There is no such thing as the perfect yoga practice, so searching for it is futile. If you find a class that you find interesting, then there is no reason why you should not see it through. You can only stop yourself if there is a genuine reason not to take it, like a physical disability,
However, you should not be too hard on yourself as well. If there are things that happened that prevented you from practicing one day, forgive yourself and just do better next time.
